Subject Eighteen is an American Double IPA brewed in the New England style by Civil Society Brewing Co. For the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in an IPA glass from a can.
Appearance
The NEIPA pours an opaque taupe hue that looks very much like white grapefruit juice. It’s topped by an inch-thick cap of white froth that shows modest retention. The head’s reduction leaves behind a soapy collar rounding the glass.
Aroma
The aroma wafts a strong scent of pine and resin that’s sweetened slightly with peach and melon. Bready malt also appears as the beer warms.

The palate begins with a taste of grapefruit that transitions to a more pronounced bite of lemon and resin. The bitterness lingers through the finish and there’s a hint of tropical fruit picked up on the swallow.
Mouthfeel
Its feel is relatively smooth with a medium body and moderate carbonation. Finishes somewhat dryly with a moderate astringency and a slight acidity.
Overall
Its appearance is exactly as you’d expect from a New England-style brew. The aroma is strong and pleasant and the palate’s bright citrus character combined with the bitter-acidic feel makes this brew oh so refreshing. A relatively high ABV isn’t noticed at all. Subject Eighteen is nothing short of a fantastic Double IPA.
