Screamin’ Reels, an American IPA by SaltWater Brewery

Screamin’ Reels is an American IPA brewed by SaltWater Brewery, and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in an IPA glass from a 12 oz. can.

Appearance

The ale pours a crystal-clear and is topped by a generous stack of soapy off-white foam that shows modest retention. Patches of lace cling to the sides of the glass while the head reduces.

Aroma

Its aroma is faint but hoppy with a scent of pine. Tropical fruit comes forth as the beer warms.

Flavor

The palate begins with a taste of orange that rises to a juicy bite of grapefruit and lemon peel. The finish mellows a bit with a taste of tropical fruit. A base of biscuit malt ties the palate together.

Mouthfeel

Its feel is relatively smooth with a medium body and moderate carbonation. Its finish is dry and slightly warm from the alcohol.

Overall

Its aroma could be stronger but smells nice. Better head retention would be nice but its appearance is otherwise fine. Its feel is right where you want an IPA. And its palate is tasty but a bit harsh. That jarring bitterness does soften as the beer warms. Its ABV is high for the style but is masked well. Whether you’re on the water or just sitting beside it, the Screamin’ Reels IPA makes for a nice n’ hoppy referesher.

Environmentally-Friendly Six-Pack Rings

SaltWater Brewery had its moment in the sun back in May 2016 when they announced they were testing biodegradable six-pack rings for their beers. Nearly two years later, the brewery is finally beginning to make use of them. Read their story here.
