A Strong Lager in a Tulip Pint Glass

Strong Lager

The Strong Lager is simply a stronger version of a standard Lager. In the United States, it is known as Malt Liquor and it typically uses adjuncts to lighten its palate. While in Europe and Asia, the brew is relatively the same but consists mostly of malt or is all malt. Fermentation is often kept short to keep the strong alcohol content from overwhelming the aroma and palate.

Style Expectations

The Strong Lager contains more malt (possibly adjuncts) for fermentation and yet will have relatively low hop levels.

Appearance

The color of the Strong Lager ranges from a straw-gold to a light copper. Its head is moderate and short-lived.

Aroma

The aroma of the Strong Lager has perceptible alcohol along with sweet grain.

Flavor

The palate includes sweet malty grain, alcohol, and no perceptible hops flavoring.

Mouthfeel

The Strong Lager’s feel is light, crisp, and somewhat grainy. The brew lacks hop bitterness and usually packs a wallop of alcohol.
