Upslope Oatmeal Stout is an English-style Oatmeal Stout brewed by Upslope Brewing Company, and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in a nonic pint glass from a can.
Appearance
The Stout pours jet black and shows thin garnet highlights when held to the light. It’s topped by an inch-thick cap of dense, tan-colored foam that shows fair retention The reduction leaves a few droplets of residue; a thin ring rounds the glass.
Aroma
The aroma strongly wafts cocoa and caramel but as the beer warms, a scent of coffee roast asserts itself.
Flavor
A taste of bready malt leads the palate and is followed by a mildly bitter taste of floral hops and coffee from the roasted malt. Its malty base mixes flavors of oats and dark chocolate.
Mouthfeel
Smooth mouthfeel is medium-full with carbonation that’s a shade over moderate. Finishes slightly dry and astringent.
Overall
Head retention doesn’t show the preferred persistence but that’s nitpicking. Its feel is right in line with expectations. The aroma is pleasant and its palate packs a lot of flavor for a sessionable brew. The Upslope Oatmeal Stout is a really nice representation of the style.
Recommended Pairings
Upslope Brewing recommends the stews, aged cheddar, and desserts as food pairings with their Upslope Oatmeal Stout.
