The Commodore, an American Stout by Ballast Point Brewing Company

The Commodore is an American Stout brewed by Ballast Point Brewing Company, and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in a mug from a bottle.

Appearance

The Stout pours an opaque black and is topped by an inch-thick cap of dense, brown-colored foam that shows fair retention. The head’s reduction leaves behind a smattering of sticky lace on the glass.

Aroma

The aroma mixes a scent of coffee roast with sweet notes of dark fruit and dark chocolate. There’s also a hint of soy sauce.

Flavor

The palate blends coffee roast with dark chocolate with the balance leaning towards the bitter roast. There’s a burnt character to the malt that’s just shy of overpowering.

Mouthfeel

Its feel is smooth and creamy with a medium-full body and less-than-moderate carbonation. Finishes with a mild astringency.

Overall

Its appearance could have better head retention but is otherwise fine. The feel supports the robust palate nicely. The aroma is pleasant and while its taste is straightforward Stout, it’s quite good. The Commodore is an enjoyable brew and a solid representation of the style.

Recommended Pairings

Ballast Point recommends the following food pairings with The Commodore American Stout: St. Louis barbecued ribs, aged cheddar, and vanilla ice cream with raspberries.
