Sun Viking IPA is an American IPA that’s brewed by 81Bay Brewing Co., and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in an IPA glass from a 16 oz. can.
Appearance
The IPA pours a nearly opaque yellow ochre color and is topped by thick cap of rocky off-white foam that shows excellent retention. Patches of sticky lace cling to the glass following the head’s reduction.
Aroma
The aroma is lightly fragrant with a scent of piney hops and a light citrus.
Flavor
The palate is led by floral hops and followed by a base of lightly toasted bread. Hoppy pine and orange citrus top things off and then sweet orange and honey mellow the tasting.
Mouthfeel
Its feel is relatively smooth with a medium body and matching carbonation. Its finish is relatively dry and less-than-moderately astringent.
Overall
The Sun Viking IPA wasn’t described as a New England style IPA but its near-opaque appearance, mild-bitterness, and dry-hopped aroma and flavor certainly share those traits. And while this brew isn’t quite as good as what you’ll find freshly tapped at your local brewery, this certainly comes close. The appearance is close, the aroma isn’t particularly strong, but it is pleasant. And the rounded bite of the palate is nearly on the money.
