Sumatra Mountain is an American Brown Ale brewed by Founders Brewing Co., and for the purposes of this review, the ale was served in a Teku glass from a bottle.
Appearance
This ale pours nearly black and shows highlights of chestnut brown at the edges. The Brown Ale is capped by a thin head of tan froth that bubbles down immediately.
Aroma
The aromatics are toasty with an added scent of coffee and a hint of chocolate.
Flavor
Tastes rich and malty with flavors of chocolate and caramel. The palate is balanced by a taste of coffee roast, nut, and mildly bitter hops.
Mouthfeel
Mouthfeel isn’t quite full bodied with moderate carbonation.
Overall
Sumatra Mountain is one helluva tasty brew. Taste profile is one typically found in stouts and porters but works wonderfully in this brown. A high ABV is masked well. A must for lovers of coffee beers and brown ales.
