Special Double Cream Stout is an American Stout brewed by Bell’s Brewery, Inc., and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in a nonic pint glass from a bottle.
Appearance
The ale pours an opaque black and is topped by an inch-thick cap of dense tan-colored foam that shows good retention. A soapy collar rings the glass following the reduction. A few droplets of residue remain during consumption.
Aroma
The aroma is strong with a sweet scent of chocolate and a hint of vanilla.
Flavor
A mellow coffee flavor initiates the palate and becomes stronger and more roasted through the tasting. Its finish delivers a tangy squeeze of lemon and a flash of dark chocolate sweetens the swallow. Toasted malt ties the palate together.
Mouthfeel
Its feel is relatively smooth throughout and becoming grainy on the backend. It has a medium body and moderate carbonation.
Overall
Strangely enough, the name of the brew indicates a creamy feel but in fact, it is somewhat grainy. Otherwise, its appearance is good and its aroma pleasant. The palate is straightforward stout with a slightly sweet finish. Fairly simple but it tastes wonderful. All things considered, the Special Double Cream Stout is an enjoyable, fine representation of the style.
