Southern Tier Pilsner, a German-style Pilsener by Southern Tier Brewing Co.

Southern Tier Pilsner is a German-style Pilsener brewed by Southern Tier Brewing Co., and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the lager was served in a pilsener glass from a can.

Appearance

The lager pours a crystal-clear straw color and is topped by a finger-thick head of white foam that dissipates rapidly. Droplets of residue and a thin ring of soapy foam are left behind.

Aroma

The aroma is slightly sweet with a scent of honey and grain.

Flavor

Hop forward palate has grassy and floral notes that ramp towards a bite of peppery noble hops and a hint of lime. The palate is tied together with a wheat base that’s lightly sweetened with honey.

Mouthfeel

The feel is smooth with a body that’s a shade below medium and moderate carbonation. Finishes somewhat dry.

Overall

The head has a short retention and its aroma lacks the hops associated with the style. A stronger hops presence in the palate would also be welcome. Otherwise, the Southern Tier Pilsner is a fine representation of the style. Only available in the Overpack’d collection, the Southern Tier Pilsner won’t inspire a purchase, but it is a refreshing, easy drinking brew. And that’s not too bad, either.

Recommended Pairings

Southern Tier recommends the following food pairings with their Pilsner: German cuisine, pizza, and wings.
