The Sierra Nevada Oktoberfest 2017 is a Märzen lager in the Festbier style. The beer is collaboratively brewed by Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. and Brauhaus Miltenberger. For the purposes of this craft beer review, the lager was served in a mug from a bottle.
Appearance
More closely resembles a traditional Märzen rather than a Festbier having a color that’s orange-gold. A finger-thick cap of fizzy white foam caps the brew but disappears quickly. Ample effervescence is visible in the glass.
Aroma
Aroma is predominantly spicy with noble hops. Sweet malt becomes more prominent as the beer warms.
Flavor
The palate begins with a flavor of lightly toasted bread and transitions to a sweet caramel. Taste then rises to a mild bite of spicy and peppery noble hops that are slightly undercut by the aforementioned caramel sweetness.
Mouthfeel
Its feel is smooth and creamy with a medium body and less-than-moderate carbonation.
Overall
Other than appearing slightly darker than the norm, this is a superb representation of a Festbier. The Sierra Nevada Oktoberfest 2017 has well-balanced flavor and is wonderfully refreshing.
Recommended Pairings
Sierra Nevada recommends enjoying Oktoberfest with these food these pairings: meats such as German weisswurst sausage and roast pork. And cheeses like mild cheddar and butterkase. Or satisfy your sweet tooth with desserts such as apple strudel and whipped cream.
