Samuel Adams Smoked Lager is a German-style Rauchbier brewed by the Boston Beer Company, and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the lager was served in a pilsener glass from a bottle.
Appearance
The Rauchbier pours a clear ruby red and is topped by a thick cap of bubbly and dense, cream-colored foam that shows fine retention. Residue coats the glass following the reduction. Sticky lace remains thereafter and a swirl of mottled froth tops the lager.
Aroma
The aroma is predominantly smoky with a scent of char and bacon; backed by hints of grain and caramel.
Flavor
The palate follows the nose with a taste of toasted bread that transitions to flavors of smoky char and bacon. Piney hops and earthy wood add bitterness. Sweet caramel, dark fruit, and black cherry round out the finish.
Mouthfeel
Its feel is smooth on the draw but then picks up a toothy grain on the backend. Medium body and a shade over moderate carbonation. The finish is slightly dry and astringent.
Overall
The Rauchbier presents nicely in the glass. Its aroma is fantastic and persistent. The palate is well balanced and complex with its smoke, hop, and sweet flavors. The Samuel Adams Smoked Lager is an enjoyable brew and a fine representation of the style.
