Raspberry Halo is an American Imperial Stout that’s brewed by Cigar City Brewing, and for the purposes of this craft review, the stout was served in a snifter from a bottle.
Appearance
The stout pours black with an inch-thick head of dense brown foam that reduces slowly.
Aroma
The aroma is sweet and savory with notes of cherry syrup and balanced with coffee roast. A hint of booze appears as the beer warms.
Flavor
The palate is generally sweet throughout the tasting, beginning with chocolate malt and transitioning to tangy berry fruit. Any balance comes from an undercurrent of mildly bitter hops and licorice. Finishes dryly with a sweet vanilla and tart berry. A high ABV of 10.7% is masked generally well.
Mouthfeel
The mouthfeel is smooth and creamy with a medium-full body and medium-light carbonation. However, it does seem to stick to the back of the throat.
Overall
Raspberry Halo features a decadent palate that’s a bit too sweet with a rich feel that’s a bit too syrupy. But even if this isn’t the perfect imperial stout, Cigar City has brewed a pretty tasty treat.
