Prince & Pauper, a Belgian-style Saison by Mikkeller ApS and Omnipollo

Prince & Pauper is a Belgian-style Saison brewed in collaboration between Danish brewery Mikkeller and Swedish brewery Omnipollo. For the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in a tulip glass from a can.

Pours a mostly clear straw and capped by towering stack rocky white foam. Chunks of sticky lace cling to the glass while the head slowly recedes. Tiny bubbles continuously rise.

Funky aroma imparts a scent that’s yeasty with notes of barnyard and wet grass. Hints of lemon and clove also appear.

Taste begins with a light cracker malt that transitions to a squeeze of lemon followed by a mild bite floral hops and cracked pepper. A gentle sweetness of malt adds some balance to the finish.

The feel is smoother than many saisons. It’s dry with a light body that’s almost thin. The pour begins with moderate carbonation but its bubbly feel disappears quickly and isn’t quite as lively as other interpretations of the style.

Yeast and hops make for a lovely palate. Its dryness is refreshing but its body is a little too light and could use more carbonation. Even so, Prince & Pauper is an easy brew to tilt back and its low ABV makes this a great option as a session beer; one you can enjoy anytime.
