Midnight Oil, an English-style Oatmeal Stout by Swamp Head Brewery

Midnight Oil is an English-style Oatmeal Stout brewed by Swamp Head Brewery, and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in a nonic pint glass from a can.

Appearance

The ale pours an opaque oily black and is topped by a thick cap of tan-colored foam that shows good retention. The reduction doesn’t leave behind any lace or residue but a soapy collar rings the glass.

Aroma

The aroma is initially sweet with a scent of dark chocolate but coffee roast dominates as the beer warms.

Flavor

Light floral hops transition to big roasted flavors of coffee and malt. Creamy oats fatten the middle. Dark chocolate and a hint of toffee sweeten the swallow.

Mouthfeel

Its feel has a smooth draw with a grainy finish; medium body and light carbonation.

Overall

Midnight Oil has a nice presentation and aroma. The feel is light for the style but it’s easy to drink and packs so much flavor for 5% ABV. The palate is absolutely delightful. Abundant roast flavor makes this a great brew for coffee lovers.
