Lovely, Dark And Deep is an English-style Oatmeal Stout brewed by Brewery Ommegang, and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in a snifter from bottle.
Appearance
Pours black with nearly an inch-thick head of bubbly, brown froth that dissipates rapidly. Nary a drop of lace on the glass.
Aroma
Aroma of molasses, dark fruit and a hint of roast.
Flavor
Robust palate mixes dark chocolate, coffee roast, fig, prune, and spice atop bready oatmeal. Finishes with a mild bite of noble hops.
Mouthfeel
Smooth but chewy mouthfeel is nearly full bodied with low carbonation.
Overall
Lovely, Dark And Deep has a pleasant nose, a rich mouthfeel, and a fruity palate. They combine to make this a serviceable oatmeal stout but it doesn’t quite measure up to the better brews of the style. Still, a nice effort by Ommegang.
Recommended Pairings
Ommegang recommends the following food pairings with their Lovely, Dark And Deep: aged cheddar, pumpernickel, roasted chestnuts, and rare roast beef with stone ground mustard.
