Kalamazoo Stout is an American Stout that’s brewed by Bell’s Brewery, Inc. For the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in a tulip pint glass from a 12 oz. bottle.
The stout pours a pitch black and capped by a thin, mocha-colored head that dissolves almost immediately.
The aroma is a welcoming scent of roast malt, backed subtly by dark chocolate.
The palate begins much the same with a taste of coffee roast, blending with dark chocolate and a complementary balance of hops. A finish of black licorice adds a nice complexity.
The stout’s smooth mouthfeel is luxuriously full and creamy with medium-light carbonation.
The Kalamazoo Stout is a toasty delight; delightful in aroma and taste.
Well, perhaps it’s not really a secret, but a key ingredient to this stout is its use of brewer’s licorice. It’s an ingredient that’s been around awhile and even predates the use of hops. It’s used by brewers to flavor and color porters and stouts while its enzymes also stabilize a foamy head.
The brewery recommends numerous food pairings including these savory choices: venison and lamb burgers, oysters, black olives, Gouda cheese, pistachios, almonds, teriyaki. They also recommend sweets of dark chocolate, nutty desserts, and baklava.
