Indian Brown Ale is an American Brown Ale brewed by Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in an IPA glass from a bottle.
Appearance
The ale pours a clear and dark brown that shows amber highlights when held to the light. It’s topped by a finger-thick cap of cream-colored foam that shows modest retention. Some sticky lace clings to the sides of the glass following the reduction.
Aroma
The aroma wafts the nose with a scent of sweet and hoppy; backed by grain.
Flavor
The tasting begins with bready malt and some coffee roast. Sweet caramel holds down the middle and the finish is bittered with citrus and earthy hops.
Mouthfeel
Its feel is relatively smooth with a medium body and matching carbonation. Finishes with a mild astringency.
Overall
As described, the Indian Brown Ale is a hybrid of styles. Its hoppiness approaches that of an IPA, sweet malt like a Scotch Ale, and a roasted character akin to a Porter. And their combination is terrific.
