I’m So Excited, I’m So Scared is an American Imperial Stout brewed by Funky Buddha Brewery, and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in a Teku glass from a bottle.
The ale pours an opaque black that doesn’t allow any light to pass through. It’s capped by an inch-thick of dense mocha-colored foam that shows excellent retention. The reduction doesn’t leave behind any lace or residue and only a thin collar rings the glass.
The aroma offers an inviting scent of coffee roast and grain. Sweet notes of vanilla and chocolate are more apparent as the beer warms.
Toasty malt and vanilla combine to create a cola flavor that initiates the palate. A taste of coffee roast follows before the finish smacks the back of the tongue with an unexpected surprise. An eye-opening, sweet note of strawberry is followed by roasted coffee and malt, dark chocolate, molasses, and vanilla.
The feel is velvety smooth and chewy with a full body and less-than-moderate carbonation. The alcohol lends to a dry and warm finish.
I’m So Excited, I’m So Scared features an intriguing twist on a coffee stout and its success hinges on that fruity surprise. Some might find it unusual but that strawberry sweetness does make a nice counter to the malty roast. And when combined with flavors of chocolate and vanilla, the stout tastes something like Neapolitan ice cream.
High marks on its appearance, a pleasant aroma, and feel. Even its high ABV is masked well.
And so there’s little to fear and every reason to pick up a bottle of this Imperial Stout. With the I’m So Excited, I’m So Scared, Funky Buddha has crafted another fantastic beer.
