I Am Ocean is an American Pale Ale brewed by Barley Mow Brewing Company, and for the purposes of this was craft beer review, the ale was served in a tulip pint glass from a can.
Appearance
Pours a cloudy, ruddy orange with a thick cap of dense, off-white foam that shows excellent retention. A few patches of lace cling to the glass; residue gathers at the collar.
Aroma
A fragrant scent of pine dominates the nose, mixed with lemon and a hint of caramel.
Flavor
The label describes the beer as a “Tropical Pale Ale” and by that, it can be thought to describe its hop flavor or fruity esters. But considering its taste, it’s more likely that the description alludes to the beer having been brewed in the tropics.
That’s because the palate follows the nose delivering a hop-forward note of pine, grass that turns somewhat medicinal. A touch of caramel softens the bite briefly before finishing with lemon and herbal hops.
Mouthfeel
Mouthfeel has medium body and moderate carbonation.
Overall
This brew drinks well when cold but that medicinal taste appears as the beer warms. I Am Ocean is a pleasant enough pale but not one to rush out and try.
