High Stepper, an American IPA by Crooked Can Brewing Company

High Stepper is an American IPA brewed by Crooked Can Brewing Company, and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in an IPA glass from a can.

Appearance

The IPA pours a burnt orange hue and whose appearance is cloudy from the abundant fine sediment suspended in the glass. It’s topped by a thick stack of rocky, off-white foam that shows fair retention. Patches of sticky lace cling to the sides following the head’s reduction. A soapy collar rounds the glass.

Aroma

The aroma wafts the nose with a scent of biscuit and sugary ripe apricot.

Flavor

The palate is hop forward, delivering a taste of spicy hops and then transitions to a bite of grapefruit. The bitterness lingers through the finish and is rounded out by ripe apricot and toasted bread.

Mouthfeel

Its feel is relatively smooth with a medium body and moderate carbonation. Its finish is quite dry and astringent.

Overall

Its appearance is adequate and its aroma isn’t particularly strong but pleasant enough. The palate is nicely balanced but certainly has enough bite to please the hopheads. High Stepper may not be mind-blowing but is in line with the expectations for the style and a solid IPA.
