Hazelutely Choctabulous is a Sweet Stout brewed by Rogue Ales, and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in a nonic pint glass from a bottle.
Appearance
The stout pours an opaque black that bleeds ruby red at the edges. It’s capped by an inch-thick head of dense tan foam that shows fine retention. The head reduces slowly to leave a soapy collar.
Aroma
Just after the pour, the aroma is very sweet with a scent of hazelnut and dark chocolate. As the beer warms, a pleasant coffee roast mixes with chocolate.
Flavor
The collision between hazelnut and chocolate is a beautiful drinking experience. Begins with a taste of burnt toast, floral hops, some dark fruit, and then the sweetness takes over. Palate turns positively nutty in the middle; hazelnut muddled with toffee and roast. Finishes sticky sweet with fig and milk chocolate.
Mouthfeel
The feel is smooth and creamy with a moderate body and less-than-moderate carbonation.
Overall
Mm, mm, mm. What’s best about this beer is that its sweetness could easily run amok but instead is grounded brilliantly with the roast and hops. Even drinkers who wouldn’t usually care for a sweet stout are likely to find this brew enjoyable.
Sweet Origin
Fans of Rogue Ales used to mix two of Rogue’s brews: their Chocolate Stout and Hazelnut Brown Nectar. The result was a flavor so popular that eventually, Rogue Ales recreated that blend as the Hazelutely Choctabulous Sweet Stout.
