Gran Riserva Rossa is a Vienna Lager brewed by Birra Peroni Industriale S.p.A., and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the lager was served in a mug from a bottle.
Appearance
The lager pours a crystal-clear copper and is topped by a finger-thick cream-colored head that exhibits excellent retention. An aggressive pour will unleash a thick pillowy cap. Streaks of residue coat the sides of the glass during consumption. Ample effervescence is visible.
Aroma
Aroma consists of floral hops and caramel. Hints of fruit and alcohol are detected as the beer warms.
Flavor
A clean palate begins a touch citrusy and mellows to its base of toasty bread and caramel. A spike of grassy and herbal hops follows, lingering on into the finish. Semisweet caramel rounds of the tasting.
Mouthfeel
The feel has a smooth draw that turns grainy and is dry throughout. Has a medium-light body, moderate carbonation, and finishes somewhat warm.
Overall
The Gran Riserva Rossa is a very nice Vienna Lager. Its appearance is excellent and its aroma is pleasant. Its feel is acceptable but could use a bit more heft. Its palate is a touch hoppy but otherwise tastes wonderful. If you’re visiting Italy, this is a brew worth trying.
