French Toast is an American Brown Ale that’s brewed by Funky Buddha Brewery, and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in a Teku glass from a bottle.
Appearance
Pours darker than expected—mahogany, in fact—with an inch-thick cap of densely packed foam that’s tan in color and reduces slowly. No lace is left on the glass.
Aroma
Aroma is nothing short of fantastic. Even when considering the name of the beer, that sweet smell of maple syrup exceeds expectations. Backed by vanilla and cinnamon, it’s unfortunate that the aroma begins to fade not long after the pour.
Flavor
The palate isn’t as sweet as indicated by the nose and stays within the realm of browns. Starts with toasty bread, vanilla, a touch of chocolate and nut. Finishes with a lingering taste of sweet maple syrup, spiced with cinnamon. Bitterness is subdued but adds just enough balance to work within this particular concept.
High ABV is masked generally well. Just a hint of booze is revealed in the aroma and again on the back end of the palate.
Mouthfeel
Mouthfeel has a medium body and moderate carbonation. For such a high ABV, you’d almost expect more heft to its feel, but this brew is quite easy to tilt back.
Overall
French Toast is a nice concept and wonderfully executed by Funky Buddha. Tastes like tomorrow’s breakfast while still maintaining many of the characteristics you’d expect in a brown ale. This craft beer is definitely worth your time and money.
