First One Down is an American Winter Warmer brewed by Wasatch Brewery (member of the Utah Brewers Cooperative), and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in a snifter from a 12 oz. bottle.

Appearance

The ale pours a chestnut brown and is topped by a finger-width head of tan bubbly foam that dissolves rapidly.

Aroma

The aroma is faint with a scent of toffee, some spice, and a hint of hops.

Flavor

Bready malt and toffee lead the palate and are followed by a hints of cinnamon and nutmeg. A rising malty warmth is quickly met by a hoppy bite that finishes with bitter citrus.

Mouthfeel

Smooth mouthfeel has a medium body and low carbonation. Finishes astringently.

Overall

First One Down is a palatable brew but is quite astringent. A greater spice presence would better serve the style. The brew is easy to drink and warming.
