Edmund Fitzgerald Porter is an American Porter brewed by Great Lakes Brewing Co., and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in a nonic pint glass from a bottle.

Appearance

The ale pours a clear mahogany brown with a glimmer of ruby highlights showing through. It’s topped by an inch-thick pad of dense, tan-colored foam that shows good retention. A thin film of residue coats the sides of the glass as the head recedes.

Aroma

The aroma is pleasant with a scent of coffee roast and a hint of dark chocolate.

Flavor

Piney hops lead the palate and soften to a taste of brown bread slightly sweetened with chocolate. A bite of floral and citrusy hops blended with roasted barley punch a finish that also has hints of tea, dark chocolate, and dark fruits.

Mouthfeel

Its feel is smooth with a medium body and medium-low carbonation. The finish is slightly astringent.

Overall

Presentation, aroma, feel, and palate all meet or exceed the expectations of the style. Most importantly, its palate is robust and flavorful, making the Edmund Fitzgerald a very fine porter indeed.

Honoring the Fallen

Great Lakes brewed their porter in honor of the 29 individuals who lost their lives aboard the freighter SS Edmund Fitzgerald that sank on November 10, 1975.
