Early Riser Coffee Porter is an American Porter brewed by Boulevard Brewing Co., and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in a tulip pint glass from a bottle.

Appearance

The ale pours a mahogany color with a thick head of khaki-colored foam that reduces slowly. A ring of soapy lace clings to the glass.

Aroma

As expected from its name, a delightful aroma of coffee roast greets the nose.

Flavor

The palate follows the nose with a flavor of coffee roast atop an underlying base of dark chocolate. Finishes with a taste of coffee that’s balanced gently by hops.

Mouthfeel

Mouthfeel is a tad thinner than expected with a less-than-medium body and moderate carbonation.

Overall

The roast flavor of the Early Riser Coffee Porter really comes alive as the beer warms but might be too subtle for those seeking a coffee beer. This brew tastes more like a traditional porter but that doesn’t take anything away from it. This is a thoroughly enjoyable offering from Boulevard.
