Coffee Stout is an American Stout brewed by Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in a nonic pint glass from a bottle.
Appearance
The ale pours black with small ruby highlights showing through. It’s topped by a thick cap of dense, mousse-like tan-colored foam that shows fine retention. Patches of residue cling to the sides and a soapy collar rings the glass.
Aroma
The aroma is quite pleasant and begins with a sweet scent of maple syrup. Coffee roast and chocolate appear as the beer warms.
Flavor
Coffee roast initiates the tasting and ramps towards bite of piney hops, stronger roast, and then mellowing with lemon tea. A malty base of caramel and chocolate lend balance and tie the palate together.
Mouthfeel
The feel is silky smooth with a medium body and moderate carbonation. Its finish is somewhat dry.
Overall
High marks all around for the Sierra Nevada Coffee Stout. It presents well and has a lovely aroma. Its feel sits so nicely on the tongue. And the palate is nothing short of superb. This brew is only available as part of the Snowpack collection but it alone is worth the purchase. If the opportunity presents itself, this stout is a must try.
Recommended Pairings
Sierra Nevada recommends the following food pairings with their Coffee Stout: chile-rubbed grilled hangar steak, Shepherd’s Pie, grilled mushrooms with herbed breadcrumbs; blue cheese and aged cheddar; flourless chocolate cake.
