Cloud Chaser Hefeweizen, a German-style Hefeweizen by Crooked Can Brewing Company

Cloud Chaser Hefeweizen is a German-style Hefeweizen brewed by the Crooked Can Brewing Company. For the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in a wheat beer glass from a can.

Appearance

The Weizen pours a clear golden yellow and is topped by a thick cap of pillowy white foam that persists briefly. The reduction doesn’t leave behind any lace or residue. A thin ring of bubbles collar the glass.

Aroma

The aroma is spicy with clove and pepper; backed by a hint of wheat.

Flavor

The palate begins with a taste of wheat bread spiced with clove. A mildly spicy note of cracked pepper bottoms out with sweet banana sticking to the back of the tongue.

Mouthfeel

Its feel is relatively smooth with a medium body and a shade over moderate carbonation. The tasting dries on the backend but the lingering sweetness becomes lightly cloying.

Overall

Its appearance could be improved. The ale shows too much clarity and its head retention is poor. The aromatics lack any fruity esters but its spiciness is nice. The feel could use a little more carbonation and its sweetness runs counter to its dryness. The palate is standard Hefeweizen and it tastes fine. Overall, the Cloud Chaser isn’t a great representation of the style, but it’s not a bad beer, either.
