Burton Baton is an American Double IPA brewed by Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in an IPA glass from a bottle.

Appearance

The ale pours a mostly cloudy copper and is topped by a thick stack of cream-colored foam that shows excellent retention. Patches of residue cling to the sides of the glass.

Aroma

The aroma is sweet and hoppy with a scent of piney hops, fruit, caramel, and booze.

Flavor

The palate is hop forward with a floral and piney flavors mixed with wood and vanilla. The bitterness becomes more pronounced hops and an earthy character from the oak barrels. Finishes with a taste of tart cherry, tangy grapefruit, and booze. A malty backbone of caramel ties the palate together.

Mouthfeel

The feel has a medium-full body and moderate carbonation. Smooth—almost creamy—on the front end that becomes very dry on the backend. Finishes with a warming sensation from the alcohol.

Overall

Burton Baton is rich, wonderfully complex, and also so well-rounded. And though its ABV is lofty, the alcohol only enhances the flavor and this brew is still fairly easy to drink.
