Blood Orange Neon Gypsy is an American IPA that’s brewed by DuClaw Brewing Co., and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in an IPA glass from a 12 oz. bottle.
Appearance
The ale pours a rusty orange and is topped by a finger-thick cap of soapy ivory-white foam that shows good retention. A smattering of lace clings to the sides and a thin ring of bubbles rounds the glass. The clarity of the IPA is cloudy with ample particulate suspension.
Aroma
The aroma consists of candied orange sugar with a hint of grapefruit.
Flavor
The palate leads off with a squeeze of grapefruit mixed with a malty base of toasted bread. Sugary sweet orange floods the middle and is then finished off with a bitter balance of grapefruit and pine resin. There’s a slight herbal and earthy character to the bite as well.
Mouthfeel
Its feel has a light grain with a medium body and moderately-high carbonation. Finishes dryly with a light astringency.
Overall
Its presentation is mediocre and its feel is a bit too sharp. Both the aroma and palate stray sweetly but are pleasant enough. And yet there’s something about its sugary character that seems off. Can’t put my finger on it but regardless, the Blood Orange Neon Gypsy is still a palatable IPA.
