2XSMASH is an American Double IPA brewed by Southern Tier Brewing Co., and for the purposes of this craft beer review, the ale was served in an IPA glass from a can.
Appearance
The ale pours a crystal-clear marigold hue and is topped by a tall stack of rocky off-white foam that shows modest retention. Sticky lace and residue cling to the sides while a ring of bubbly froth gathers at the collar. Fine effervescence is visible in the glass.
Aroma
The aroma is faint but carries a soft scent of pine and tropical fruit.
Flavor
The palate begins with a mild bite of pine that’s mellowed by white bread and a flash of caramel before hitting the taste buds with bitter pine, resin, and pepper. Soft tropical fruit and caramel provide a sticky finish.
Mouthfeel
A smooth draw leads a medium body that turns slightly grainy with moderate carbonation on the backend. Finishes dryly with a warming alcohol sensation.
Overall
Mosaic is the only hop varietal used in this Double IPA and it packs quite a bite. The feel from the booze runs a little hot but doesn’t impact the palate too strongly. Its malty backbone is simplistic in taste but balances the bitterness nicely. Overall, the 2XSMASH is a solid Double IPA.
Recommended Pairings
Southern Tier recommends the following food pairings with their 2XSMASH: smoked brisket, roasted chicken, sharp and bleu cheeses; sweets of crème brûlée and caramel.
