Even as the craft beer industrywide sales slipped a percentage point last year, the number of craft breweries continues to explode. According to a statistics from the U.S. Treasury Department, the total number of breweries nationwide now exceeds 9,000. And nearly half of all states in the country have at least 100 breweries.
According to the Brewers Association, the number of breweries in 34 states has doubled since 2013. And has tripled in nine states.
In 1985, there were only 52 breweries in the country. And then as the craft beer industry really began to take off, that number grew to 2,045 just 10 years ago. And now there are 9,175 according to the statistics that were last updated March 31. Some of the breweries in that total include those who have permits but haven’t actually opened yet and some breweries that have just recently closed.
California leads all states with 1,134 breweries. That’s more than double the 509 that no. 2 Washington possesses. Mississippi has the fewest with only 17. And even the tiny District Of Columbia has 14.
