Lagunitas Brewing Company

The Lagunitas Brewing Company was founded in 1993 in Lagunitas, California, and according to the brewery’s website, its origin began with a ruined dinner.
The story goes that Tony Magee started brewing with a stovetop homebrew kit, and after a couple batches, some stray wort had spilled down the back of the stove. When Thanksgiving came, the wort caught fire and burned the turkey to a crisp. It was then that Tony’s wife Carissa kindly asked him to take his new hobby elsewhere.
He moved into an old storage shed in the town of Forest Knolls, California (next to the town of Lagunitas, which Tony thought had a cool-sounding name…) and he started brewing more and more. The beers ranged from vile and repugnant, to delicate and exceptional. And then came IPA, and he knew he could never go back. Eventually, Tony grew out of that space and moved just down the road to Petaluma, bringing his recipes and the Lagunitas name with him.
Years of Growth
Lagunitas became one of the fastest-growing craft breweries in the United States. Production increased from 27,000 US BBL (32,000 hL) in 2004 to 106,000 US BBL (124,000 hL) in 2010. By March 2011, the company had 92 employees with distribution in 32 states.
One morning while driving from his home to the Petaluma brewery, Tony thought about his beer traveling to the other side of the country and realized how to get beer there fresher. The answer was: Chicago.
And thus, on April 9, 2012, Lagunitas announced plans for a new Chicago-based brewery equipped with a 250 barrel brew house which will also have a 600,000 US bbl (700,000 hL) capacity. With the help from some new friends in the Windy City, one year later the Pilsen-based production facility opened its doors and started brewing for Chicagoland and everything east of the Rockies. Meanwhile, back out West, a Seattle brewpub followed soon after.
Acquisition by Heineken
On September 8, 2015, Heineken International acquired a 50% stake in the company to help it expand its operations globally. As a result of the deal, Lagunitas was no longer considered a craft brewery under the Brewers Association definition of “craft”, since Heineken’s stake was greater than 25%.
Less than two years later, on May 4, 2017, Heineken purchased the remaining portion of Lagunitas, making it the sole owner of the brewery. Founder Tony Magee continued as CEO of Lagunitas, with the intention of expanding production and distribution of Lagunitas beers worldwide.
And the brewery has done just that. Today, Lagunitas beers are available in 20-ish countries and growing.
