Flathead Lake Brewing Co.

Flathead Lake Brewing Co. is a microbrewery that’s located on the north shore of magnificent Flathead Lake in Bigfork, Montana.

History

The Flathead Lake Brewing Company started in 2004 in Woods Bay, Montana. Our owner Greg Johnston has two very specific goals. The first: to make the best beer ever. The second: to have fun doing it. Naming the brewery wasn’t hard. FLBC overlooks the shores of the largest freshwater lake in the West – and we would argue the most beautiful.

In 2006 we were honored with becoming the youngest brewery ever to win not just one, but two, World Beer Cup awards. Our brewery brought home a Bronze medal for our Peg Leg Porter (now the Painted Rock Porter) and a Silver medal for our Mutiny Stout (now the 369′ Stout).

By 2010, Greg’s daughter Sandy Johnston joined the crew and took over as General Manager and helped remodel the taproom in Woods Bay into a pubhouse and started on the rebranding of the company’s look.

By 2012 the Woods Bay brewery was at full production and plans were made to expand. With not wanting to leave home (Bigfork) the old bowling alley in Bigfork was acquired and the next two years were spent remodeling the building to become one of the most sustainable breweries in Montana. In 2015, Sandy’s FLBC Pubhouse and Greg’s second brewery opened in Bigfork.

Now, one can find an FLBC ale throughout Montana and in northern Wyoming.

We at FLBC work hard, play harder, and do everything to the highest standard. For us, it’s about being leaders in the beer industry, it’s about supporting local and environmental sustainability, and it’s about contributing to the community that has so graciously embraced us. Most importantly for our crew, it’s about making beer and food that we are proud of. We love what we do, and we hope you do, too.

Montana is the Treasure State, and we are Montana’s Liquid Treasure.

FLBC Pubhouse

At our Pubhouse you’ll find views overlooking Flathead Lake that will take your breath away. There are 16 great tap selections to choose from, carefully selected wines from around the country, a full liquor bar, and a cocktail menu carefully designed using local distilleries and fresh ingredients.

On the main floor we offer a fresh, seasonal menu featuring daily specials and a wide range of food entrées such as gourmet burgers and pub fare.

In 2019, we opened the downstairs level of the Pubhouse, the Cellar. Here we have brought Chicago-style deep dish pizza to Montana. Keep in mind that deep dish pizza takes 45 mins to cook, so kick back, relax, and enjoy a brew while you wait!

Both floors have open air decks with equally amazing views of the lake. When the weather permits, you can sit outside and enjoy the crisp, clean Montana air while sipping on a drink or savoring a meal.

On your way out, check out our beer gear. There is everything from t-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, pint glasses, and vintage wood signs made by local Meissenburg Designs.

Bigfork Brewery

We currently brew our most popular brands at our new brewery in Bigfork, five miles north of our Woods Bay location. People liked our beer so much we just couldn’t keep up with demand – not a bad problem to have. The new brewery started production in the Spring of 2014. We have a 30 bbl brewhouse (31 gallons to a barrel) and eight 60 bbl fermentation vessels. As of April 2016 we have added one 60 bbl bright beer tank and one 120 bbl bright beer tank, which has increased our potential annual capacity to 5,500 bbls a year. Our brewhouse equipment is manufactured by the W.M. Sprinkman Corporation in Wisconsin. This is our main production facility that also includes our Wild Goose canning line and 50 oak wine casks for our North Shore Project.

In 2019 we added a sour beer room in the Cellar of the FLBC Pubhouse. This room is a temperature controlled, closed off area that will create the perfect environment to experiment with barrel aged sour beers. Our sour beer is inoculated with a wild yeast strain (Brettanomyces) that takes six months to two years to develop the desired sour and tart flavors. Stay tuned for the new and exciting sours that will be tapped in the Cellar!
